Amira receives a new toob and a drawing stick for her twelfth birthday. Growing up in Sudan hasn’t always been easy, but life on her family’s farm has been peaceful and loving. The only thing they had to worry about were the sandstorms. That is until the Janjaweed rebels attack her village. Amira, her mother, and her sister join the rest of the village’s survivors on a long walk to Kalma, the displaced persons’ camp. Here she struggles to regain her hope for the future among the depressing conditions. Told in free verse poems, this novel will introduce young readers to horrors that occurred in Darfur in an age-appropriate way. Recommended for grades 5-8.
