Talia’s father is a scientist who studies whales. The summer after her mother dies, he brings Talia with him to Churchill, Manitoba in the Arctic Circle while he studies beluga whales. Talia brings with her jar of wishes, which she started when her mother got sick. She is desperate to find a unicorn to grant her a wish when the Inuit woman whose house she is staying at tells her a legend about narwhals, considered the unicorns of the sea.Talia feels that if she can just find a narwhal, everything in her life will be made right again. When her father goes out to sea for six weeks, Talia must come to terms with her own grief and decide whether to open herself up to the new people and experiences in Churchill. This powerful book is a journey through grief and out the other side again. Highly recommended for grades 4 & up.
