Mori is growing up in a closed community outside of Boston founded by her great-grandmother and other neuroscientists from MIT. It is now run as a utopia by the Krita company, with three other communities in different areas of the United States. As Mori and her friends approach their thirteenth birthdays, it is time for them to start thinking about what latent talents they want released in order to become productive members of their society. Mori, Julia, Benji, and Theo have always been friends. They spend their summers hanging out together, following the rules because they know that is what protects them. But when Ilana moves in on their street, she changes the dynamics of their friendship, making them question not only their own roles but the true meaning of friendship. This engaging read brings up a variety of moral and ethical dilemmas in a way that is perfectly suited for middle grade readers. Highly recommended for grades 4 & up.
