The Abracadabra Kid: A Writer’s Life
by Sid Fleischman
grades 4 & up
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Sid Fleischman has died. He was 90 years old. In his memory, I have to recommend his autobiography, The Abracadabra Kid. Born in 1920, he lived through the Great Depression, and served in the Navy during World War II. Before becoming a writer, he was a magician and traveled with a vaudeville act. His life story is told with his usual wit and humor, make it an easy and entertaining read. It is full of helpful advice on becoming a writer as well. Those who loved his Newbery Award winning Whipping Boy and other books, will be fascinated to read his life story.
